Estimados padres:
The Rules for Safe Navigation
The rules for an appropriate and responsible use of the Net can be classified under two objectives.
- First… AVOID THE DANGERS THAT EXIST ON THE NET, They do exist and there are many of them. It is what is called Advice for Safe Navigation.
- Second… A RESPONSIBLE AND ETHICAL USE OF THE COMPUTER , or in a more direct way, the commandments of the Net.
If your child already knows them CONGRATULATIONS. Encourage him/her to read them again and to always bear in mind these rules when navigating.
If he/she does not know them, read them slowly with your child and make sure the/she uses them as they will help him/her to avoid difficulties…
SAFE NAVIGATION:
- IF YOU LIKE TO CHAT, NEVER FORGET THAT YOUR PRIVACY COMES FIRST. Do not give your real name, nor details of your home or the school where you study. Do not give your telephone number and do not talk about brothers, sisters or friends. Always remember that the person you are in contact with may or may not be who they say they are.
- Be careful if you have a web cam… The ability to see your contacts through the Net is very nice, above all because it is always makes us happy to see good friends. But take great care when using it with unknown people …Remember that all the images, acts and words that you use or say through the web cam can be kept by your contacts and in that way distributed, edited, shared through the Net whenever somebody wants. What’s more, they can even be manipulated later in order to be distorted against you. So be prudent in your use of the camera.
- TAKE GREAT CARE WITH THE PHOTOS THAT YOU SHARE… as we have said before regarding video images and pictures that you can create with your web cam. Be very careful who you send your or others’ photos to. Programs that allow you to change and modify images can be manipulated and thus leave you in a dangerous situation. Don’t forget that they can also be distributed immediately through the Net. Exchange your photographs only with people you fully trust.
- IN SOCIAL NETWORKS: Consider carefully the personal details that you put in your profile, only include what is really necessary, and it is better if they are nicknames or false information. Let your friends know you on the Net by your nickname. Do not accept indiscriminately all those who want to be your friend. Remember that a photo says a lot about you: don’t upload them indiscriminately and without permission of those who go out with you. And you should know that everything you publish is the property of the website and they can publish it in any part of cyberspace.
- NEVER KEEP A DATE WITH SOMEONE YOU HAVE ONLY KNOWN THROUGH THE NET. Sometimes you meet interesting people on the Net. If you have the opportunity to meet in person, inform your parents or older brothers/sisters and ask them to accompany you to the date. Never go alone without informing someone as again the person you are meeting is not the person they have said they are, and even if they are, they may not have the same reason for meeting as you have.
- NEVER GO ALONE TO COLLECT PRESENTS OR PRIZES THAT YOU HAVE WON ON THE NET. Sometimes you can receive invitations to go to a place under the false pretence of having won a prize. And when you go alone you get a big surprise…
- DO NOT BUY ANYTHING ON THE NET WITHOUT YOUR PARENTS’ PRERMISSION.
- IF YOU RECEIVE A THREATENING MESSAGE OR HARRASSMENT DO NOT BE AFRAID TO INFORM YOUR PARENTS. They will know what to do and how to help you.
- IF YOU FIND A PAGE WITH ILLEGAL OR DISAGREEABLE CONTENT TELL YOUR PARENTS OR GUARDIAN. They will know how to explain to you better than any other what you have seen.
- IN THE SAME WAY THAT YOU AVOID SPEAKING BADLY, USE AN APPROPRIATE LANGUAGE ON THE NET. Good manners should be upheld on the Net. Don’t write swearwords or make mistakes with spelling as all of this will not say much about you.
- USE THESE RULES IN EVERY COMPUTER THAT YOU USE. Be consistent. If you use these rules in the computers in your house and in those in school, make the same use of them when you are with friends or in the cybercafé.
A RESPONSIBLE AND ETHICAL USE OF THE NET:
- MAKE A LIST OR SOME GUIDELINES SO AS TO BE SURE WHERE YOU ARE NAVIGATING, which pages you need to see or which topics to look for. On the internet there is a lot of information, so much that it is very easy to lose the direction in which you are navigating or to jump from one topic to another without getting really involved in any one, so hat you end up only wasting valuable time that you could have used more effectively in other tasks.
- BE CLEAR WHEN YOU ARE GOING TO NAVIGATE FOR FUN AND WHEN FOR SERIOUS WORK, if you are not mentally prepared and focused on a specific task from the moment you turn on the computer you will probably do neither thing well. Be strong and although you see messages that have to be answered, invitations to chat etc… if you have entered to work, avoid distractions. Your time is to be valued.
- DO NOT BELIEVE EVERYTHING THAT YOU READ ON THE NET. Be clear about two things on the internet: the first is that not everything is on the Net ; there are things that are still in encyclopaedias and in libraries that you will not find uploaded. And the second is that not everything that is on the Net is true. Compare and check the information in other pages or in good books. Many people trust the first web that the search engine shows, but you shouldn’t do that. Check closely the information you are looking for.
- ALL NAVIGATION LEAVES A MARK. IT CAN ALWAYS CATCH YOU. Consequently do not commit illegal acts on the Net. It’s simply not true that they cannot catch you and dangerous to think that as everybody does it, you too can do it. It would be a good idea to remember that Spanish law considers illegal, among other things, the following:
- The violation of the data protection act of a personal character
- The violation of intellectual property
- Racist and xenophobic content
- False or fake documents
- Threats
- Defamation and the spreading of offensive and calumnious messages
- The diffusion of programs designed to suppress without authorisation or neutralise technical mechanisms of computer programs
- The diffusion of pornographic material to those under age
- The commercialisation of child pornography
- Content which informs about the making of explosives
- Web pages which incite suicide
- The sale of drugs or arms on internet
- EMPATHISE WITH OTHERS... Don’t do to others what you would not want them to do to you. If you do not like people lying to you, bothering you, insulting you, don’t do it to others. In chat rooms be yourself; don’t pretend to be someone you are not. Don’t insult or slander anybody, nor upload or talk about things relating to others that you would not wish to be done to you. Don’t use the Net to hurt others. Don’t be a coward, believing you are safe on the Net.
- FULFIL THE 10 COMMANDMENTS OF INTERNET:
- One should not use the computer to hurt others.
- One should not use the computer to interfere in the work of others.
- One should not meddle in others’ files.
- One should not use the computer to steal.
- One should not use the computer to give false testimony.
- One should not use software which you have not paid for.
- One should not use others’ resources without authorisation.
- One should not appropriate the intellectual work of others.
- You should always think of the social consequences of the programs that you write.
- You should always use the computer considerately and respectfully.
